Vector Graphics

One type of design that is getting plenty of use on the web these days is vector graphics. Vectors are different than raster graphics because they are not made up of individually colored pixels, rather, they are a formula of shapes colors and gradients.

Because they are displayed via a formula and not an exact placement of pixels, the image can be infinately resized and never loose its sharpness or clarity.

Vectors have now taken on a style of their own with flash cartoons, avatars, icons, and all sorts of symbols and patterns.

I use illustrator to create and edit vector images. These images would then have to be exported into png, jpg, gif or other common image format for further editing with photoshop or other image editor. Vectors can also be displayed using the PDF format if you do not wish export or convert it into a raster image.
